Bad news for Anna Paquin and her X-Men fans. Her part has been cut from the movie ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.  The actress only filmed one scene– “a big rescue sequence featuring Rogue, Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore).”  There was no mention as to whether Ashmore had any additional scenes or if he’s wound up on the cutting room floor also.  Rogue is a more pivotal character in the movies and Paquin is a better known actress, so that could be why she’s being singled out in headlines.

Director Bryan Singer explained the reason behind the edit, by saying:

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous.  It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

He doesn’t mention their approach to Rogue in this movie, considering that she lost her powers in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, but did state that Paquin’s performance wasn’t the problem.  “She did a fantastic job,” he said. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”

For her part, Paquin stated that she “completely understood” the edit.  Singer concluded, ”It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production.  Films evolve.”

With such a huge cast, this was probably always a possibility and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more cuts as Singer edits the film down.  I’m a little miffed that Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde gets to stay and that Rogue is being dropped.  Not to mention that so many new characters are being shoehorned in.  Although, with not knowing details about the storyline, there could be a logical explanation for all this.
