Fans at least year’s San Diego Comic Con were incredibly stoked to hear that Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ was officially announced as a part of Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate along with other Phase Two films like ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. However, when the release date was announced as November 6, 2015, people started to question whether or not the film would even be included in Marvel’s current phase, which ultimately culminates in ‘The Avengers 2’. Now, we officially have the answer from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

In a recent interview with MTV, Feige spoke about films beyond Phase Two and declared ‘Ant-Man’ as the official start of Phase Three. Here’s what he had to say about the hero’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three. Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie. I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

Feige went on to expand on the idea of different corners and where we’ve been so far:

“So much of the stories we’re telling [right now] is about the core ‘Avengers’ characters we’ve now met, and they’ll be evolving in big, surprising ways, in Cap’s next movie and Thor’s next movie and of course in ‘Iron Man 3,’ as we get them all into the next ‘Avengers’ film. Beyond that… ‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop.”

Finally, he confirmed news that Stan “The Man” Lee himself shared with the world in an interview a few months back:

“‘Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them. He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”

Phase Three is shaping up to be the one where they can finally start introducing newer characters that the mainstream aren’t as familiar with in their own solo films. Both Ant-Man and Doc Strange are great places to start, but what about the other movie that Lee informed us about? He and many other people have been talking about a Black Panther movie for ages. Could Wakanda be popping up in the next phase for Marvel Studios?

Another potential Phase Three film?

If I had my choice, I’d want to incorporate a younger team into the mix like The Runaways, who were said to have a movie in the works at one point, or the Young Avengers. By that point, the regular Avengers will be quite established already, so to have younger heroes aspiring to be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might not be a bad way to go. Another thing I’d pitch would be a Heroes For Hire TV show incorporated into Phase Three, assuming ‘AKA Jessica Jones’ doesn’t get off the ground. Sure, they could do a buddy cop thing for Luke Cage and Iron Fist as a film, but why not throw in the rest of the team as well? There are SO MANY possible corners to explore!
