Universal Pictures has released their first official trailer for the new Joseph Kosinski sci-fi film ‘Oblivion’ starring Tom Cruise and it does a pretty good job showing how spectacular this tentpole film will be!
‘Oblivion’ takes place in a post-apocalyptic world 60 years after a war with an alien race has devastated the planet. Cruise plays one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on the now uninhabited Earth while the rest of humanity lives in the clouds.
While the trailer is packed with action, it really doesn’t do much in revealing what the plot of the film is. The trailer has a ‘Matrix’-esque quality to it with Morgan Freeman as a Morpheus-like character named Malcom Beech who is the leader of the human resistance on Earth and Cruise’s character, Jack, the only one who seems to have found a world that isn’t supposed to exist.
The film is based on a 2009 graphic novel written by Kosinski which he was adapted for the big screen with Willam Monaham (‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,’ ‘The Departed’). The script was then polished by Michael Arndt (‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire,’ ‘Star Wars VII’) and Karl Gajdusek (‘Last Resort,’ ‘Dead Like Me’).
With Monaham and Arndt having done script duties, the film should have a good story behind it. Have a look at the trailer after the synopsis below and tell us what you think of ‘Oblivion.’
Synopsis:
Oblivion is an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.
Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.
Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
