‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski has been trying to get ‘Oblivion’ made into a movie since 2009. Over the years, it’s been at different studios with different titles and different actors attached, but now in 2012 with Universal Studios, production has finally started for the resilient director and his crew.

Starring Tom Cruise, Melissa Leo, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, and Morgan Freeman, ‘Oblivion’ is a futuristic love story about “a soldier stationed on Earth, the surface of which has been destroyed by aliens. When he discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off a chain of events that cause him to question everything.”

/Film has the first photos from the set when the crew was shooting outside of the Empire State Building. Like they point out, these scenes are probably flashbacks considering that the Earth is scorched and most of the civilization is now living in the sky. Check out the photos below.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by director Joseph Kosinski, ‘Oblivion’ is set to open in theaters on April 26th, 2013, just one week before ‘Iron Man 3’, which means that Universal must have a good amount of confidence behind the film.
