The move was ambitious to start with but in this new trailer for the MMO game ‘Defiance,‘ Trion seems to have combined two media platforms in what promises to be a new way of gaming.

If you recall, ‘Defiance’ will be both a TV show on the Syfy network as well as a new game developed by Trion. The premise is that the two will be connected with the promise that players would be able to interact with the TV series through their actions in the game and what occurs on the show will have an impact on the gamers playing experience. Thanks to G4TV, you can now see how this new interactive way to play will be accomplished.

I’m excited to see where this concept will go. It’s a large undertaking combining both media and gaming platforms but the knowledge that audiences can be somewhat involved in a show’s outcome (without the show being a reality series) is impressive and bold.

Here’s the official description for Trion World’s ‘Defiance’ game followed by the trailer:

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces players and viewers to a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the disparate survivors of a universal war who endeavor to build a new society among the devastation. The game combines the intense action of a AAA console shooter, with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart weaves the rich tapestry of the world into a series with the scope, characters, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic. Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence each other and evolve together over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance.

Defiance stars Grant Bowler (‘True Blood‘), Julie Benz (‘Dexter‘), Jaime Murray (‘Warehouse 13‘), Tony Curran (‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’, ‘Blade II’), Stephanie Leonidas (‘Mirrormask’, BBC’s ‘Dracula’), and Graham Greene (‘Dances with Wolves’), plus recent additions Mia Kirshner (‘Not Another Teen Movie’, ’24’) and Fionnula Flanagan (‘Lost’) as fascinating characters whom you’ll get to meet in the game.
