‘Defiance’ To Bring MMO Gaming To a New Level

One of the most ambitious games to be publicized at GamesCon this month was the Trion Worlds ‘Defiance.’ This ground-breaking game will not only be bringing MMO games to the console level but it will also coincide and co-exist with a TV show of the same name. Normally MMO gaming occurs via a PC/Mac but Trion has developed ‘Defiance’ for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. It will allow players to be part of an ongoing world that continues to go on even when they are not online. The most exciting part, however, is that this game will also exist in conjuction with the Syfy channel’s show called ‘Defiance.’ That means events and players in the show will affect the game and vice versa. How will this work? Basically, the TV show will take place in a futuristic St. Louis during an alien invasion while the game takes place in San Francisco at the same time. The TV show will be able to reference events that have occurred online and even mention the avatars of the players who have achieved certain game goals (good or bad). In addition, characters in the show may just show up on your console game as you are playing to give you a specific quest or mission which will be referenced in the next episode. According to Robert Hill, senior producer at Trion Worlds, “A character might be like, ‘I just had the most amazing experience in San Francisco,’ and you can be like ‘I was there!” There are still a lot of kinks to work out, but Trion Worlds has made it clear that even if you don’t watch the show, it won’t distract from the game. The show will just offer more background and character development to those who do. ‘Defiance’ is being written by Rockne O’Bannon who is well known as the consulting producer for ‘V’ as well as the screenwriter on ‘Farscape’, ‘V’ and ‘Alien Nation.’ There hasn’t been any word yet as when the release of the game and TV show will be. But with an impressive feat as this is going to be, I’m sure Syfy and Trion Worlds want to make sure this undertaking is done smoothly for maximum effect. If successful, it will be a shot of new blood in the world of gaming and television! For a preview of what the game will look like, check out the teaser below!

This is one seriously inventive idea! If I had an Xbox or Ps3 (I’m a PC man myself), then I would be joining the ‘sign up here’ queue!

The show sounds okay and the interweaving of the game and show is intriguing. However, the thing that excites me the most here is that consoles are getting their first MMO. If Trion Worlds can pull this off, here’s hoping that we can get something along the lines of WoW or Guild Wars on console as well.

I really like the whole integration idea. Although I don’t play any MMO, I think bringing it to the small screen will widen it’s appeal and can open up lots of other avenues. My hesitation is that the show will be part of Syfy and their track record is not the best at the moment.

That’s true. Anything Sci-Fi associated with Syfy should be quaking in its boots. Then again, it could be worse….they could be on AMC :P
