Guillermo del Toro has brought us some truly memorable movie monsters. From his adaptation of the ‘Hellboy’ comic to the beautifully enthralling creatures of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, del Toro has proven time and time again that he has a great eye for monsters.

In 2013, del Toro will bring us monsters again. Only this time, they will be much… much bigger! Del Toro’s next film ‘Pacific Rim’ from Legendary Pictures just started filming last week on November 14th and is set to hit theaters in 2013. The film is an homage to the classic giant monster and daikaiju films of the 50s and 60s. In the film, gigantic aliens have invaded the Earth and the planet fights back by using giant robots of its own. As a fan of giant monster movies all my life, I’m extremely excited about this one!

But I’m not the only one who’s thrilled about ‘Pacific Rim’. Del Toro himself recently spoke with Wired Magazine about the film and had this to say:

“It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters. We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc. … We are working with actors that I absolutely adore. Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman.”

Del Toro, giant monster, robots, and Ron “Hellboy” Perlman all together in what del Toro himself has described as “the biggest monster movie ever made”? I am so there!

What do you think? With the upcoming ‘Godzilla’ and now ‘Pacific Rim’, are giant monsters about to have another run at the cinema?
