While it was rumored that Bryan Singer‘s ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea‘ adaptation might actually be more a modern interpretation, a recent interview has clarified that the movie will actually be taking place after the Civil War. No, Singer isn’t switching teams and working for Marvel Studios instead of Fox. I don’t mean the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ but the actual American Civil War that pit brother against brother and almost tore the United States apart.

It will be interesting with this time period what impact if any it will have on the story as Singer last September stated that the film “contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and sci-fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages.”

While talking about the latest trailer for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘, Singer’s next project was brought up and that was when he confirmed the time period:

“It’s the same reason I’m setting 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea right after the Civil War. Everything wasn’t suddenly hunky-dory between the North and the South – there was still hostility and tension. The same thing exists here.”

There are two big ways this could factor into the movie when it is released. The first, of course, is the idea of the North and South being at odds with one another. The more likely is the discrimination that was widely in place in that time period. Obviously it is a topic that he has often touched upon in the ‘X-Men’ movies so it would seem like something that Singer might factor in here as well.

We don’t know much about what direction he is taking with ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ but with filming kicking off this Fall I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it in the near future.

Are you looking forward to Singer’s take on ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’? Do you think that it was a good call to stick it in the original time period or is this a story which would have benefited from a modern day telling? Share your thoughts below!
