John Boyega

Daisy Ridley has already gone on the record as declaring that ‘The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda is cuter than the Porgs which debuted in her own movie, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’.  Now her co-star, John Boyega is also taking sides.  While he was busy signing autographs and taking selfies with fans, he was questioned by TMZ, with Boyega exclaiming:

“I love Baby Yoda!  Baby Yoda, man!”

But that wasn’t all.  He silently mouthed the words, “Fuck Porgs!”

Ouch!  But this isn’t the first time Boyega has expressed a dislike of the Porgs, which are, in reality, puppets and apparently when they are not on screen, they look a little creepy.

Two years ago, prior to the release of ‘The Last Jedi’, director Rian Johnson discussed the inexplicable appeal of the poor Porgs and their divisive nature:

“When we brought them on set and I could see the crew members. All the work on set stopped when we brought the Porg puppets out. I could see crew members just like, adoring them, and then other crew members giving them the side-eye. [Laughs] And I was just like, ‘Okay, this is a little microcosm of what the fan reaction will be.’ But I don’t know, though. They feel Star Wars to me, in their proper place. If the movie was Porg-centric [Laughs], then we could have a conversation.”

I don’t think anyone flat-out hated Porgs.  At worst, cynics tagged them as a marketing tool to sell toys, but what else is new?  Porgs really didn’t have an impact on the plot, although they are responsible for what I personally consider the most uncomfortable scene in any ‘Star Wars’ movie (and we’re talking about a franchise where a brother and sister kissed on the lips) — the scene after Chewbacca killed a Porg and roasted it, only to be guilted out of eating it when its friends and family showed up, looking all sad.  I don’t know why, but that completely creeps me out.  Just me?

But there is clearly more to the Porgs than we realize.  There has to be a reason why their “co-stars” seem to universally hate them.  Maybe they’re total divas behind the scenes.

New episodes of ‘The Mandalorian’ are released every Friday on Disney+, with the exception of the week of December 20, the opening of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.  The new episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ will be released on Wednesday, December 18.  And yes, Porgs will be in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.
