The Magicians one sheet

SPOILER ALERT: If you didn’t watch ‘The Magicians’ Season 4, this article contains a MASSIVE SPOILER so turn back now.  Otherwise, you were warned.

It seems that it’s either feast or famine in the world of ‘The Magicians’.  After completely losing all magic, it has returned… maybe too much.  Or as Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) comments “too goddamn much.”  In fact, now the gang from Brakebills looks to have been tasked with saving the world from this new magic explosion which sends them on another sprawling quest, which, among other things, brings them face to face with a giant Kraken.  And they have to do it all without their fearless leader, Quentin, whose death last season led to the return of magic.

As Kady (Jade Tailor) says, “It is the literal end of the actual world.”  Julia (Stella Maeve) also declares, “Today we are saving the world, and this time it’s going to stick.”

Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends— and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it, and as the excess builds, an apocalypse looms. Can the magicians get their shit together to save the world without Q?

‘The Magicians’ took a route that very few shows take– killing off the main character.  It should be intriguing to see how this program deals with that massive vacuum.

The executive producers previously stated:

“We want The Magicians to visit strange and fascinating new places, and we know we can’t get there by treading the same garden path others have before us. So, we did the thing you’re not supposed to do — we killed the character who’s supposed to be ‘safe.’ In real life, none of us are safe.”

Showrunner Sera Gamble added:

“It’s not that Quentin’s story is done on ‘The Magicians’.  It is that Jason Ralph is no longer a series regular on the show, and Quentin Coldwater is dead on the show, and the story moving forward is about the aftermath of that … Jason has left the show, and Quentin is dead, and a lot of season five is about what happens next, just as when somebody dies in our lives, the next season of our life is about what happens.”

As announced in the trailer, ‘The Magicians’ returns on January 15, 2020.
