The Lord Of The Rings Series Has Ordered A Second Season

With over a billion dollars on the line, it should be no surprise that Amazon Studios was going to pick up their upcoming ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series for a second season and now it has been confirmed. The news came this last Sunday night when the company held its annual holiday part in Hollywood at the H Club. Amazon Studios’ head Jennifer Salke confirmed the detail.

With the second season getting picked up so early, the production company will have a brief hiatus after the first two episodes of the first season are filmed. This is to allow for a shorter period of time between the freshmen and sophomore seasons and will give director J.A. Bayona as well as showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay “time to map out and write the bulk of Season 2 scripts.”

This is a relatively common practice when it comes to straight-to-season orders to better plan for the future and potentially allow for filming to occur for the two seasons either back-to-back or simultaneously if the scripts and locations allow for it. This is also how Peter Jackson shot many aspects of his own blockbuster films, as it means there are fewer pre-production expenses for each chapter.

It also helps that as much of the story is set outdoors that they can use this time to skip New Zealand’s winter season.
