As citizens of Geekville, it comes naturally to us to try to find meaning in every little thing in our favorite shows, especially when they tease us with some kind of unique symbol. ‘The Walking Dead’ is no exception to this. In Season 9 of the series, Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) is gravely wounded and subsequently is taken away in a helicopter that bears a symbol consisting of three circles. It was announced somewhat recently that AMC was expanding the Walking Dead universe. We already have the original ‘TWD‘ and ‘Fear the Walking Dead‘ and they are in the midst of creating a third television series. The new series is yet-unnamed so everyone is just calling it the “TWD3.” Sharp eyes have already noted that the same three circle symbol appears in connection with the CRM organization in ‘FTWD.’
In a panel for ‘TWD3’ on Saturday at New York Comic Con, ‘TWD’ chief content officer Scott Gimple explained:
“We’ve seen that three-circle symbol… those three circles, and I’m saying it here, represent three different civilizations that are bound and entwined in some ways and in some ways very, very different… ‘TWD3’ will be “one of those places.”
Gimple further revealed that ‘TWD3’ will stand on its own, with very little crossover with the other two series. However, he also said that the mystery of the three-circle civilizations will be one of the foci of the new series, stating:
“[TWD3] “very much gets very deeply into that mythology. As far as Rick’s story is concerned, it’s very, very separate, but we’re gonna get a very good look at just how big the world of The Walking Dead is.”
As if that’s not complicated enough, we also have a trilogy of TWD movies to look forward to, all of which star Lincoln as Rick. What little we know is that the first film will explore the mythology of the CRM group.
The 10th season of ‘The Walking Dead’ airs Sundays on AMC with the premiere of ‘TWD3’ to begin sometime in Spring 2020. The Rick Grimes movies have yet to announce a release date.
