Star Trek fans rejoice! ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is coming into its third season and CBS just released its first trailer (above) and photos (below) for the season at the ‘Star Trek Universe’ panel at New York Comic Con, held on Saturday.
The official synopsis for the season reveals:
“After making the jump in the second season finale, season three of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ finds the U.S.S. Discovery crew dropping out of the wormhole and into an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the U.S.S. Discovery crew, along with the help of some new friends, must together fight to regain a hopeful future.”
It’s a rather vague description, but this plot line is an interesting move that should allow the writers to cast off their canonical leashes and really flesh out the storyline. It reminds me of ‘Star Trek: Voyager‘ and how they were able to explore a whole new Sector full of unfamiliar cultures and technologies (and a few familiar ones as well). CBS is playing this one a little close, so it’s hard to find much in the way of sneak peek spoilers, but I hope they and their writers are able to jazz up the story enough to keep the series alive and avoid a premature shutdown like ‘Star Trek: Enterprise.’ Time will tell, so keep checking back here on ScienceFiction.com for all the latest news, opinions, and Trekkie gossip.
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 3 will air beginning in 2020 and the first two seasons are currently available for streaming on CBS All Access. It will be starring Sonequa Martin-Green (Commander Michael Burnham), Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou), Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Cmdr. Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Ensign Sylvia Tilly), and Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber).
