The short ‘Jurassic World’ film ‘Battle at Big Rock’ announcement seemed to come out of nowhere. While we know the short film is being released on FX this weekend, we don’t know much past that! With a short runtime you can’t give out too many details without spoiling what we’ll be seeing, but director Colin Trevorrow was able to give a few hints as to the plot, how long it is, and when it takes place.
While we don’t get any plot details for the film, Trevorrow was able to share when it takes place and what the mindset of the world’s populace is:
“Battle At Big Rock is a short film that takes place one year after the events of Fallen Kingdom. It’s about a family on a camping trip to Big Rock National Park, about 20 miles from where the last film ended. There have been a few sightings, but this is the first major confrontation between dinosaurs and humans.”
“It felt like a first step into a larger world after the last film. You have these animals loose in an unfamiliar environment, they’re disoriented, struggling to adapt. The first people they run into are bound to be camping. I wanted to see that.”
Personally, this is precisely the kind of scene I’m looking forward to checking out as well! He would go on to give the reason he wanted to create this story:
“The world is bigger than just the characters we’ve been following in the films. We’ve finally taken the story off Isla Nublar, we wanted to show a glimpse of that new reality. If this really happened, you’d see a series of random disconnected incidents that would create a pattern of chaos. I wanted to see one of those incidents.”
The reason they can’t give too many details away is that ‘Battle at Big Rock’ doesn’t have a long runtime in the slightest.
“It’s 8 minutes. It was supposed to be shorter. I know 8 minutes is an eternity on the internet, but I hope people will set some time aside and put on a good pair of headphones.”
The real treat though is that even though this is a short movie we’re going to be getting new dinosaurs!
“There are two species we’ve never seen before. The Nasutoceratops, which is a beautiful herbivore that feels like a Texas Longhorn. And the Allosaurus, one of the most iconic dinosaurs of all time. This one was a juvenile in the last movie. She’s all grown up now.”
Are you thrilled that Colin Trevorrow was able to create ‘Battle At Big Rock’? Do you feel that a short film used to tease how the world reacts when they come in contact with dinosaurs in our everyday lives was the perfect way to bridge the gap between ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ and the third movie? ‘Battle at Big Rock’ will air on FX this Sunday night. ‘Jurassic World III’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 11, 2021.
