With ‘It Chapter 2’ preparing to be released it is time to think about the future of Stephen King adaptations. However, director Andy Muschietti isn’t sure that closing the door on Pennywise is the way to go about that. We’re not talking about the “supercut” version of the first two installments that he is interested in working on either.
While it isn’t clear if he believes that a prequel or somehow a sequel could happen, he does feel there are other ways to continue to explore the “mythology” which King has crafted.

According to Muschietti:
“There is a whole mythology to the book though…Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It [aka Pennywise] has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material. It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology. It’s very exciting. But, for now, there’s nothing on the table.”
The way that the novel closes, it feels hard to say that we would see Pennywise return down the line. However, as we don’t know how the film adaptation of ‘It Chapter 2’ will end, it isn’t clear if he will be defeated entirely or if there is a way for the creature to be back in another 27 years.
While a few fun takes of exploring the town of Derry in the past could prove to be entertaining, I would love to see Pennywise return for another outing with The Loser’s Club having left and believing that the demonic entity had been defeated for good.

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “IT CHAPTER TWO” brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.
We’ll float with ‘It Chapter 2’ on September 6th, 2019!
