At D23, it was announced that Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey headline the cast of Pixar’s ‘Soul’, the second Pixar movie of 2020, following ‘Onward’.  ‘Soul’ was directed by Pete Docter (‘Inside Out’) and Kemp Powers (‘Star Trek: Discovery’).  Powers also wrote the screenplay with Mike Jones.  Joining Foxx and Fey in the cast are Daveed Diggs, Phylicia Rashad, and Questlove (Ahmir-Khalib Thompson).

Foxx portrays Joe Gardner, the first black male lead in a Disney animated film.  Gardner is a middle school teacher whose true passion is jazz music.  Fey’s character is known only as 22, “a soul-in-training who has an unexpected encounter with Joe when he accidentally finds his way to the” other-dimensional “You Seminar,” the “fantastical place where we all discover our unique personalities.”  Together, Joe and 22 must work together to get Joe back to Earth, while “making him think again about what it truly means to have soul.”

‘Soul’s tagline is:

“Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you?”

Disney/Pixar unveiled artwork depicting both Foxx and Fey’s characters and one of the settings, presumably the “You Seminar.”  This art was revealed to the crowd in attendance, and shared on Twitter:

Based on the movie’s plot and art, it’s perfect that Docter directed, as ‘Soul’ bears a strong resemblance to his previous hit ‘Inside Out’.

‘Onward’ opens on March 6, 2020, and ‘Soul’ follows on June 19, 2020.
