The Saturn Awards

It’s time for the Saturn Awards, the annual accolades meant to honor the types of films that more prestigious entities like the Academy Awards and Golden Globes tend to ignore.  While the Saturn Awards were originally specifically crafted to honor science fiction, fantasy, and horror, over the years, the criteria have expanded to include traditional action and more.  It has sometimes been criticized for wonky classification, and that’s true again this year in a couple of spots.  The Action category is usually for “realistic” movies devoid of supernatural/paranormal elements, but ‘Glass’ is nominated in that category.  ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is nominated as a Horror TV series.

Speaking of wonky, the period of time for qualification is really wide, so there are movies that opened two weeks ago, like ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ competing alongside stuff that came out well over a year ago, like ‘A Quiet Place’.  In fact, both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ are nominated for Best Comic-to-Motion Picture Release and they were released roughly one year apart.

Unlike other awards, the Saturn Awards do discern between regular TV and streaming and have those projects separated.  There are also separate awards given to Younger Actors, and prizes for home video and even local theater.

The winners will be announced on September 13.
