The Society

The cast of Netflix’s mysterious series ‘The Society’ has released a video announcing the show is coming back for a second season.  It isn’t clear whether production has begun, but the clip does announce that Season 2 will be released in 2020.

The first season consisted of 10 episodes, each a full 60 minutes long, unlike most “hour-long” shows that clock in around 45 minutes.

‘The Society’ is fronted by ‘Supernatural’s Kathryn Newton, and the cast also includes Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jacques Colimon, Olivia DeJonge, Alex Fitzalan, Kristine Froseth, José Julián, Alex MacNicoll, and Toby Wallace.

The Society follows the story of a group of teenagers who must learn to run their town after all the adults mysteriously disappear. It transpires in a place called West Ham, Connecticut.  The mystery begins when the students of the local high school return from a canceled field trip and find that everyone is gone.  A forest appears surrounding the town and communication no longer works, making any attempt to leave or contact the outside world futile. The teenagers must come up with their own rules to survive with limited resources.

The show has been praised for its thoughtful examination of a post-apocalyptic scenario in which teens much rebuild society, leading to 100% more debates over the merits of socialism vs. capitalism or Democracy vs. dictatorship, than the typical teen show.

Check out the video from the cast.  There will be some SPOILERS afterward.

Season 1 ended in a cliffhanger, with the teens discovering that their parents and the other adults didn’t vanish.  Rather they have!  The adults and children are still in their home town, where it’s the teens who have vanished.  This fake West Ham is a replica in… another dimension?  It’s left unclear.  Allie (Newton) who had stepped up as leader, has found herself dethroned, presumably replaced by the psychotic Campbell (Wallace).

Teasing Season 2 in an interview with Cosmopolitan, Wallace said:

“The way things end in the show, there’s quite a lot of potential for the shift in power and a shift in kind of alliances between characters, including the relationship between me and Elle, and various other characters.  I think Campbell’s mission to get power, as successful as he seems to be, will probably fall at some point…I’ll be surprised if he’s completely successful.”

‘The Society’ was created by Christopher Keyser (‘Party of Five’) who also executive produces along with Marc Webb (‘Amazing Spider-Man’).
