RoboCop

Neil Blomkamp’s ‘RoboCop’ sequel is still in the works, but if fans of the original were concerned with this being a complete overhaul, rest assured that at least the original RoboCop “uniform” will appear.  When a fan asked on Twitter if the original suit would appear, Blomkamp replied that it was “1 million% original.”

That isn’t the only thing from the original movie that’s coming back.  Original screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are also back… well, they were.  The pair turned in one draft, but Blomkamp and Justin Rhodes have taken it and are going in their own direction– a direction that Blomkamp hopes will be true in spirit to the original director Paul Verhoeven.

In January, Neumeier said:

“Ah, so they are, Neill Blomkamp and his screenwriter Justin Rhodes have done a pass on the script we were writing on, and they’re doing another one. It is a slightly different concept in some ways than we were originally doing, Neill wants to do. I don’t want to talk too much about it, or somebody will call me and tell me to shut up, but we’re hopeful, and I think Neill really really wants to make a good ‘RoboCop’ movie. His idea is that it should be the proper [Paul] Verhoeven if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after ‘RoboCop’ I think that’s what he is trying to achieve and I hope he does. We’ll see what happens next.”

Blomkamp has even expressed a desire to bring back Peter Weller, who is now 72 years-old, to appear in the new film.

In 2014, José Padilha attempted to reboot ‘RoboCop’ with a completely new film, with Joel Kinnaman in the lead, but it was a failure.

There’s no telling when or if Blomkamp’s version will become a reality, but keep checking back for updates.
