Terminator: Dark Fate

‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ doesn’t hit theaters until November, but based on the volume of promotional material coming out, you’d think it was opening next week.  Among the material released is a behind the scenes video in which producer James Cameron, who directed the first two films in this franchise, who stated that ‘Dark Fate’ is a sequel to 1991’s ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’.  In keeping with the tone of the original movies, Cameron revealed that ‘Dark Fate’, which is being directed by Tim Miller, is aiming for an R-rating.

In an interview with Flicks and the City, which has since been taken down, Cameron stated (transcription by TheTerminatorFans.com):

“I think, tonally, what makes this a direct sequel to T1 and T2 is as much about the tone as it is about the narrative: it’s R rated, it’s grim, it’s gritty, it’s fast, it’s intense, it’s linear.  The whole story takes place in 36 hours. It’s not this kind of grandiose, complex story. It’s just very focused on the characters, it’s very now, it’s very present and it’s just a fast white-knuckle ride.”

Later in the interview, he accidentally dropped a curse word, and shrugged it off by saying, “Hey, it’s gonna be an R-rated movie, so I can swear.”

There have been five ‘Terminator’ movies up til now, and the first three were rated-R.  Perhaps hoping to draw a wider audience, 2009’s ‘Terminator: Salvation’ and 2015’s ‘Terminator: Genisys‘ were rated PG-13.  But if ‘Dark Fate’ is really a sequel to ‘Judgement Day’, then those two (and ‘Terminator 3’) don’t count anyway.
