If there is anything that superhero movies have taught, it is that redemption is possible. Today, life imitates art as Disney has decided to rehire James Gunn to direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’!
This is the real deal and not a rumor! Deadline broke the news stating they have confirmed with Disney as well as with Gunn’s representatives of the rehiring. Needless to say, a collective noise of celebration was heard around the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The decision to rehire Gunn, according to the outlet, was actually made months ago as conversations between Disney and Marvel continued even after the House of Mouse fired Gunn. Gunn’s saving grace was the humility that he exhibited throughout the whole ordeal first taking ownership and apologizing for his past actions and how he conducted himself as the situation played out. Because of this, Alan Horn, the president of Walt Disney Studios, decided to reinstate the director.
One may wonder if getting the directing gig for Warner Bros and DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ film may have nudged Disney towards this decision. It is hard to say as news of Gunn directing the film didn’t emerge until last January and talks with DC would have occurred before then.
As to how this rehiring will affect both films? Marvel Studios has agreed to wait until Gunn is finished with ‘The Suicide Squad’ before starting on filming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3.’ Considering the script is already written by Gunn himself, it is safe to say that production of the last film in this trilogy will be a smooth transition.
We’ll have more on this as news comes out. In the meantime, get out your Walkman and start getting that playlist ready!
