Eternals

While ‘Avengers: Endgame’ might end up running over three hours long, it has nothing on ‘The Eternals‘ which might end up spanning ‘tens of thousands of years.” While that will likely be compressed to a slightly shorter runtime, it does have Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige giving us an idea of exactly how far into science fiction the next movie could be leaning into. Feige shared that “everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film” and having a movie that spans all of human history and then some is one way to be both “different” and “unique.”

Feige specifically stated:

“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

When the Eternals were initially introduced, they were shown off alongside the Deviants, and both sides were offshoots of humanity created by the Celestials. It should be noted that we’ve seen hints of the Celestials already introduced throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe as beings who have wielded Infinity Stones, as well as at Knowhere from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films which was built inside the severed head of one of these beings. Ego the Living Planet from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ is also said to be a type of Celestial though doesn’t have the same look like the others who we’ve seen.

Considering that in the comics we know that Thanos is an Eternal-Deviant hybrid, it feels that there are multiple ways that the upcoming film could tie into the existing properties and expand upon them.

Are you looking forward to the introduction of ‘The Eternals’? Do you feel that they will somehow include Thanos or Celestials in the movie? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
