When James Gunn was unceremoniously fired from Marvel Studios by Disney, there was a lot of anger about the future of Marvel’s films. It wasn’t just what he was being forced to leave behind in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ but the potential of everything else on the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which he was said to be involved in. After months of near silence, Kevin Feige is finally weighing in on the creator’s departure. Not only does it sound like his vision for the next GOTG movie is going to remain intact, as we’ve previously heard, but that his vision didn’t actually extend past it.

Previously, Feige had stated that Marvel has had early discussions with James Gunn “about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the ‘Cosmic Universe’ and the Guardian characters.” However, it sounds like this was taken out of context, or he is backsliding, as he is now saying:

“His influence was Guardians. It was Guardians. It was his input on Guardians and the Avengers films, as you’ve seen in Infinity War, and on the Guardians 3 script, which we’re still using. So you’ll see that influence. I think online, sort of the notion of ‘architect across multiple cosmic things’ was slightly blown out of proportion.”

It is easy to see how one could make a jump from what Kevin had said years ago and Gunn’s constant enthusiasm about all things Cosmic Marvel into Gunn appearing to be more influential here than he was. We’ll never really know if this is Marvel Studio’s backsliding on how much of an impact the director was meant to have with how things played out. However, this does track with the lack of involvement with ‘Captain Marvel‘ Gunn seemed to have had. If he was the architect of the cosmic side of Marvel, then he would have weighed in heavily there before being let go.
