Early casting for Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’ included a character named Karen which isn’t a name you can find when looking through the history of these heroes but a new rumor is claiming to reveal who Karen actually is. The rumor was spawned by MCU Cosmic and claimed that Karen will actually end up as a take on Margo Damian.
The only reason this almost feels off is that the actress they are looking for is described as “The studio is looking to cast an actress in her early 30s for the role of KAREN. Open to any nationality or ethnicity particularly Middle Eastern, African and Native American. Powerful, a timeless quality, a leader. Warm, nurturing and intuitive… AKA she can kick- ass but had warmth. Should have an international/ timeless feel” and that she is never really thought of as a leader in the comics.
That being said, it wouldn’t be unlike the MCU to make changes to characters. This inclusion would be one for the Jack Kirby fans of his ’70s introduction to the characters as Margo, along with her father Damian, are archaeologists who discover that ‘The Eternals’ exist in the first place. While some of this is from their solid work and study of the past, much of this discovery also comes from their friend Ike. Ike happens to be Ikaris who is one of ‘The Eternals.’
If this proves true, it seems that Marvel Studios will indeed by keeping close to the source material in how these characters are revealed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least spiritually.
Kirby’s style was used to great success in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ so without James Gunn and the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ ushering in the next stages of the MCU it feels like Kirby’s influences on the cosmic side of the comics would be a good path for the studio to take. Not much is known about the film at this time outside of it being written by Matthew K. Firpo and Ryan Firpo with Chloé Zhao sitting in the director’s chair.
A release date has yet to be set for ‘The Eternals,’ but it will most likely be filling one of the open 2020 release dates which Marvel Studios has reserved.
