It is hard to keep track of how many canon issues ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ has run into at this point, and the Klingon warships have been a visual standout for many so far. In the third episode of the second season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ titled “Point of Light” the answer to this comes through. Honestly, this one actually fits with what we know about the Klingon Empire at this point.
If you haven’t seen the episode yet and want to run into it spoiler free, this is the time to turn back!
Right off the bat, we learn that Tyler is going to be responsible for creating the Klingon battlecruiser D-7 which is something fans of The Original Series are much more familiar with. In fact, we’ve heard over the years that the Klingon Empire has no qualms in stealing or trading technology to enhance their own. With this in mind, it is no surprise to see them taking ideas from Starfleet. An excellent example of this is from the classic episode titled “The Enterprise Incident” where the Klingons actually trade many of these D-7’s to the Romulan Empire in order to acquire cloaking technology.
In the episode, Tyler specifically states “Behold the D-7, future battlecruiser of the Imperial Fleet” and further towards The Original Series we see ‘Discovery’ racing.
We’ll just ignore the fact that Lorca’s shuttle has already identified a different ship as a “Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser” when he is captured by the Klingons in “Choose Your Pain,” and this is supposed to be the first appearance of the iconic ship.
So, while they’ve just fixed up one apparent canon issue that was vexing fans, they ended up creating another at the same time.
Are you thrilled that we’ll finally be seeing the iconic Klingon D-7 appear on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’? Do you think that they’ll find a way to fix the mention of one in “Choose Your Pain”? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
