It looks as though Netflix’s adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s IDW comic book series ‘Locke & Key’ has found its lead, as ‘La La Land’s Rosemarie DeWitt has signed on to play Nina Locke. In addition to DeWitt’s casting, Petrice Jones has signed on to play Scot Kavanaugh, while Bill Heck (‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’) has been offered the role of Nina’s husband Rendell, but has not yet signed.
DeWitt and Jones join Connor Jessup who plays Nina’s elder son Tyler, Emilia Jones as the middle Locke child Kinsey, and Jackson Robert Scott as the youngest child Bode. The cast also includes Asha Bromfield as Zadie and Zoe Wells, Griffin Gluck as schoolmate Gabe, Sherri Saum as teacher Ellie Whedon, Kolton Stewart as captain of the hockey team Brinker Martin, and Steven Williams as another educator Joe Ridgeway.
In the comic, Nina moves her kids from Los Angeles, into her husband’s ancestral home, Keyhouse, in Massachusetts, after he is killed. The kids soon discover a set of magical keys that give them supernatural abilities and draw the attention of a demonic force.
Nina uses alcohol to deal with all of the upheavals in her life.
In addition to ‘La La Land’, DeWitt may be recognized for the ‘Arkangel’ episode of ‘Black Mirror’, ‘The Last Tycoon’, the 2015 remake of ‘Poltergeist’, and ‘Digging for Fire’.
Frances O’Connor portrayed Nina in the ‘Locke & Key’ pilot that was made for Hulu. However, after Hulu passed, Netflix ordered the show straight-to-series but recast all of the roles except for Bode/Jackson Robert Scott.
Petrice Jones starred on the Youtube Red series ‘Step Up: High Water’ and has appeared on ‘Stan Lee’s Lucky Man’ and ‘iBoy’ among others.
On ‘Locke & Key’ he will play Scot Kavanaugh, a horror movie buff who becomes infatuated with Kinsey.
Should Bill Heck take the role of Rendell Locke, it will either be a one-off appearance in the first episode, or will be recurring in flashbacks. Heck has previously appeared on ‘The Alienist’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and more.
It appears that casting is moving forward rather quickly, so production may begin soon. I so, it’s possible that the first ten-episode season of ‘Locke & Key’ could arrive before the end of the year.
