A lot of people have been wondering whether ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is going to hold up to the source manga comics, which are so beloved by the fans. Having James Cameron on board as producer and Robert Rodriguez directing do not hurt the film’s chances, though they still have a lot of work to do to get audiences on board. To start that work, the film has begun their marketing campaign, releasing clips like today’s action scene (which you can watch below) to show off what fans can expect from the movie.
Unfortunately, clips like this one may not be what drives folks to the theaters to see ‘Alita.’ While the action looks intense, a battle between Alita (Rosa Salazar) and Grewishka, a massive cyborg warrior played by Jackie Earl Haley, all of which looks very well choreographed and stylized, the CGI takes me right out of it, and I cannot help but wonder whether the look is intentional or if Rodriguez just could not figure out how to render the characters correctly. The uncanny valley of it may be the ruin of ‘Alita: Battle Angel,’ though we will not know for certain until the film premieres on February 14th.

From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.
