As was expected, ‘Black Panther’ has become the first superhero movie to land a nomination for Best Picture or the Academy Awards. But of course, also as expected, it has no shot at winning. It wasn’t nominated for any of the other major categories for acting, directing, or screenplay. Like most sci-fi/comic book movies, its other nominations are relegated to the more technical categories– Best Costume Design (for Ruth E. Carter), Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), Best Sound Mixing (Steve Boeddeker, Brandon Proctor and Peter Devlin), Best Sound Editing (Benjamin A. Burtt and Steve Boeddeker), Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart), and Best Original Song for “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA. Maybe it’s just me, but “Pray For Me” by The Weeknd featuring Kendrick Lamar is way better. (And both are superior to ‘Shallow’ by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from ‘A Star Is Born’, which will probably win.)
‘Black Panther’ was not nominated for Best Visual Effects, but ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ was even though some of the VFX in that movie were among the worst I’ve seen in over a decade– specifically, any shot of Mark Ruffalo in the crappy CGI Hulkbuster armor.
Not surprisingly, that is the only category in which ‘Infinity War’ is nominated, and the same goes for ‘Ready Player One’ and ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’.
‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ is not surprisingly up for Best Animated Feature. It has already won the Golden Globe, the Producers Guild of America Award, and the Critics’ Choice Award, and was deemed the best reviewed animated movie by Rotten Tomatoes, so it’s kind of a lock for the Oscar. (Back to the Best Song category, shouldn’t ‘Sunflower’ by Post Malone featuring Swae Lee, be nominated? Once again, MUCH better than ‘Shallow’.)
While ‘Spider-Man’ might be a lock, ‘Black Panther’ isn’t guaranteed to win in any of the categories it is nominated in, but just by being nominated, it has broken new ground in terms of bringing respectability to the superhero movie genre.
