‘Star Trek’ fans are nothing if not dedicated. This shows not just in the more typical fan outlets, but also in the unusually fertile realm of fan productions. While there has never exactly been a shortage of ‘Star Trek’ fan films, there’s been something of a boom in the decade since ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ went off the air. While the franchise has since had something of a revival in the form of the J.J. Abrams reboot films, many fans feel that ‘Star Trek’ works best in a more episodic format, and some of the more ambitious fan projects seek to replicate that.

‘Star Trek: Renegades’ is one such project. Funded through Kickstarter and Indiegogo contributions, the ultimate goal of the project (per its Kickstarter listing) is to produce the film as a pilot to be presented to CBS as a potential web series. In the event that CBS passes on their pitch, the creators intend to release the film in a non-profit form and produce future episodes through a similar model of fundraising and non-profit releases.

Though there is still have some distance to cover before any sort of a release comes to pass, the ‘Renegades’ crew has released a very impressive trailer. See for yourself:

It is ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant , and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation’s main suppliers of dilitium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s normal jurisdiction. For this, Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s former security officer and current head of the newly reorganized Section 31. Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew – mostly outcasts and rogues – even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what is causing the folding of time and space, and stopping it – at all costs. But will they be able to put aside their differences and stop trying to kill one another in time to accomplish their mission?

The cast of ‘Star Trek: Renegades’ features a number of veteran ‘Star Trek’ performers, including Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Robert Picardo, Richard Herd, Manu Intiraymi and Gary Graham, many of them reprising familiar roles.
