Shazam

Zachary Levi may use his powers for good in ‘Shazam!’, but according to new footage in the latest trailer, he occasionally doesn’t use his powers for the best.  Levi’s red spandex-clad superhero is really a tween boy (Asher Angel) masquerading as an adult, and what does a tween who can suddenly pass as an adult do?  Try and buy beer, of course.

You can see that and other new sequences in the new trailer below:

Of course, a superhero needs a lair, but where do they get them?  Shazam and Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) turn to a regular realtor who doesn’t seem prepared to find a castle-like structure on a cliff, with raging water hitting rocks below.  (Wait a sec, that kind of sounds like Aquaman’s lighthouse, now that I think about it.)  It probably makes it so much easier to have a secret hideout when all you have to do is travel to Antarctica and fling a glowing space crystal.

Speaking of ‘Aquaman’, audiences have reacted extremely well to this lighter DC superhero movie.  It’s made over $1 billion worldwide.  Nearly every part of ‘Shazam!’ that has been revealed so far indicates that this will also be a more fun super lick.  In fact, the trailer reveals a tag line that spoofs the one from ‘The Dark Knight’– “He’s Not So Serious.”

Mark Strong stars as ‘Shazam!”s villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who is glimpsed briefly in this trailer.  ‘Shazam!’ also stars Djimon Hounsou as the wizard Shazam, plus Cooper Andrews, Jovan Armand, Michelle Borth, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Ian Chen, D.J. Cotrona, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Marta Milans, and Natalia Safran.  David F. Sandberg directed the picture.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still, a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

‘Shazam!’ will be flying into your local theater on April 5th, 2019!
