Much of the upcoming “Star Trek” ‘Picard‘ series from CBS All-Access has been a mystery so far but Alex Kurtzman has shared that we’ll see Patrick Stewart playing a “radically different” character. He also hinted at what time period the series will be set in. This is the first time we’ll be seeing Stewart playing Jean-Luc since the 2002 release of ‘Star Trek: Nemesis,’ and for many, it can’t debut soon enough! While Trekkies the world over will often argue over who their favorite captain is, Picard often comes out on the top of that list.
Kurtzman has shared a few key pieces for the upcoming series without giving us any real spoilers. We do know that it is set in the original universe and takes place after the events of the 2009 release of ‘Star Trek.’ This means that when history was re-written, it did create an alternate universe and that the original one was able to continue on. In fact, when Leonard Nimoy’s Spock was unable to prevent Romulus from being destroyed in the film, it had a direct impact on what Picard was doing:
“Picard’s life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire”
This indicates that we’ll be seeing a future point in the original “Star Trek” universe and that Picard will likely have a new goal in life. The Romulan Empire was at war for the entire span of his tenure as the Captain of the Enterprise and finding “unification” between the Federation of Planets and the Empire was often one of his goals. Kurtzman shared that Stewart was only willing to return on one condition:
“If we do this, I want it to be so different, I want it to be both what people remember but also not what they’re expecting at all, otherwise, why do it?”
We do know that none of the cast from ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation‘ had previously been asked to reprise their roles or at least they were keeping quiet on it and Kurtzman didn’t crush any hopes that we could see some of them return. While he wouldn’t share any specifics one way or another, the producer did state that, “Anything could happen.”
What do you think of a “radically different” ‘Picard’ in the upcoming “Star Trek” series? Do you feel that he’ll still be working for Star Fleet here or will be doing something different with his life? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
