If you think ‘Game of Thrones’ has thrown out all of the twists and turns that you can handle, think again! Daenerys’ dragon-babies are not technically dragons! Thanks to a fan on Reddit, we now know that we are dealing with a different creator altogether!
The traditional Dragon should have four legs in addition to a pair of wings, making for a total of six appendages. Daenerys’ children have only two legs, thus making Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion something called wyverns.
The eagle-eyed fan on Reddit discovered that the dragon characters depicted in the video game Skyrim are also wyverns and have the same characteristics as Dany’s dragons. While the obscure factoid has quickly spread online, I wouldn’t expect the dragons to suddenly be referred to as wyverns in Season 8 of ‘Game of Thrones.’
According to Ally Pennell, who wrote a blog outlining the difference between the two creatures, wyverns are actually smaller than dragons, so if the three ‘Game of Thrones’ creatures were actual dragons, they would be even more massive, which would be hard to imagine! The size alone would make Dany and her children the most formidable team in the Seven Kingdoms.
Season 7 of ‘Game of Thrones’ had the Night King taking the life of Viserion, leveling the playing field between the humans and the White Walkers. Viserion comes back as an ice dragon, which in the books that inspired the TV series, George R.R. Martin explains are an entirely different breed of dragon. The ice variety hails from the Shivering Sea, and are many times larger than their fire-breathing Valyrian counterparts. So, what’s the rule for ice wyverns? Inquiring minds need to know!
‘Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season will premiere in April 2019 on HBO.
