Pre-production of the Margot Robbie leading DC film ‘Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn‘ has just taken another step forward as Chris Messina (‘Argo’,’Devil’) has officially joined the cast to play the villainous Victor Zsasz in the film! Ewan McGregor‘s Black Mask is still the leading villain in the movie, but Zsasz will be working for or with Black Mask. Cathy Yun is just increasing the talent which she’ll be able to direct when putting the actors on screen with a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

If you aren’t familiar with who Victor Zsasz is, the character is “a sadistic serial killer who carves a tally mark onto himself for each of his victims.” As the story takes place in Gotham City, it should come as no surprise that any of the bad guys introduced in the story are enemies of Batman. In fact, Zsasz first was introduced in 1992’s ‘Shadow of the Bat’ #1 which was part of the “Batman: The Last Arkham” series. It wasn’t until ‘Batman Chronicles’ #3 in 1996 that his origin story was revealed and almost made him look to be a twisted version of Batman. This is because he was once the CEO of an international company who inherited a family fortune which made him quite wealthy. Only, his parents die in an accident when he’s 25 instead of being murdered in front of him as a child.

At this point, Victor gambles away his money while suffering from depression and ends up losing his fortune to Penguin. After everything is gone from his life, he attempts suicide but ends up killing a homeless man instead. He quickly becomes addicted to the rush it gave him and ends up becoming a serial killer.

The villain has also gone toe-to-toe with Harley Quinn in the comics so there will likely be a few Easter Eggs to the comic fans out there included as well.

Are you excited to see Victor Zsasz appear in ‘Birds of Prey’? Do you feel that this serial killer will be true-to-form from the comics or will they be taking his concept and changing up who he is? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
