With the release of ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘ on the horizon, the marketing department behind the film’s viral website is starting to shore up the canon from the MonsterVerse franchise. When Gareth Edwards’ first film was released in 2014, there wasn’t yet a plan to create a cinematic monster universe but that soon expanded while Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ ‘Kong: Skull Island‘ was in development. Released in 2017, it established that the films took place in the same world and gave us details on Monarch.
Now, Monarch’s website is starting to fill in more details about how it is all connected. Thanks to the “hollow earth points” as well as the post-credit scene in ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ we were able to learn that humanity already knew about Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. Things are now expanding even more as the Monarch website has started teasing events from some of the original Toho movies. It isn’t clear if they’ve worked a deal to bring some of these into canon or are just Easter Eggs for eagle-eyed fans who love everything about the King of the Kaiju.
For starters, a tweet referenced that Godzilla was heading towards a sunken land mass in the ocean which appears to be referencing ‘Submersion of Japan’ while another tweet had him reappearing in the Sea of Okhotsk which could very well be referencing the 1991 release of ‘Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.’ In the film, we learn that Godzilla once defeated King Ghidorah in that very sea where he has remained for the last 200 years.
While it would be hard to shoehorn the events of the Toho films directly into canon at this point, some of them could very well find their way into the world which has been crafted so far.
Do you think that we’ll be getting some of the original Toho movies made into canon or are these just clever Easter Eggs for fans? Are you looking forward to checking out ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ when it is released next year? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action-adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters’ will be roaring into theaters on May 31st, 2019!
