J.K. Simmons Isn't Confident He'll Return As Commissioner Gordon

With the future of Ben Affleck as Batman up in the air, it should be noted that could also mean we won’t see J.K. Simmons (‘Whiplash’,’Juno’) back to reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon. Originally the actor was slated to appear in ‘The Batman‘ prior to Affleck potentially leaving the role. While Affleck has had two outings as The Caped Crusader so far, we were only briefly introduced to Simmons as Gordon in 2017’s release of ‘Justice League.’

While being interviewed about his new film ‘The Front Runner,’ Simmons was asked about returning to the DC cinematic franchise:

“Nothing has changed. There are conversations going on, that I’m not going to make public. As far as I know, there’s no opportunity, in the immediate future, for me to do more Commissioner Gordon, but I continue to be optimistic that it will happen again.”

Simmons is open to reprising the role and give us a more in-depth take of the character. While ‘The Batman’ was the next likely place he would appear, it should be noted that ‘Birds of Prey And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn‘ is still slated to take place in Gotham City while Batman is away. If Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary are busy squaring off against Black Mask, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see the Gotham City Police Department show up at some point in the film. It could easily be a way to further tie the movies together without throwing a powered character in audiences faces.

That being said, if things fall through, I believe Marvel Studios should think back to how successful he was at playing J. Jonah Jameson in ‘Spider-Man’ for Sony and find a way to play the character for the MCU version of The Wallcrawler.

Would you like to see J.K. Simmons back as Commissioner Gordon or should they recast the role if Affleck gets replaced as Batman? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
