Once everything was awesome, but that no longer seems to be the case, as the new trailer for ‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’ finds heroes Lucy a.k.a. Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Emmet (Chris Pratt) in a Mad Max-like desert wasteland.  It’s not clear why they’re there, but that seems secondary as viewers are immediately introduced to new baddie General Mayhem, a.k.a. Sweet Mayhem, voiced by ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine”s Stephanie Beatriz.  Fans of the building bricks and more specifically, Minifigures, may notice that Mayhem doesn’t have the average Minifigure physique, but rather that of one of the LEGO Friends.

That explains why the action takes Emmet and his new ally Rex Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt, in a self-parodying role) to the “Sis Star System.”  The first ‘LEGO Movie’ involved a kid raiding his dad’s LEGO collection to craft his own elaborate adventures.  It looks as though in the sequel, the boy’s sister invades, getting her glittery mitts on Minifigures like Superman (Channing Tatum) and others.

As stated, Pratt pulls double duty in this sequel, as both Emmet and Rex Dangervest, a Minifigure that seems inspired by his ‘Jurassic World’ character Owen, with a dash of Star-Lord.  In addition to Banks and Tatum, Allison Brie also returns as Unikitty as well as her alter ego Ultrakatty, along with Jonah Hill as Green Lantern, Nick Offerman as Metal Beard, Charlie Day as spaceman Benny, and Will Arnett as Batman.

Joining them are Beatriz, Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, and Arturo Castro as Ice Cream Cone.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

The battle to defeat them and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman, and their friends to far away, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.

Unfortunately, directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller are not returning.  Instead, the sequel is co-directed by Mike Mitchell (‘Trolls’) and Trisha Gum (‘Robot Chicken’).

‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’ will assemble in theaters on February 8, 2019.
