In the Season 4 episode of ‘Legends of Tomorrow‘ titled “Wet Hot American Bummer,” we learned that Swamp Thing exists in The Arrowverse. We didn’t end up seeing the character, and the fact came up in casual confirmation, but it makes you wonder if this will be the same creature which will exist on DC Universe when his show premieres next year. That is going to be a big unknown for likely years to come but Matt Ryan’s take on John Constantine was the one who casually name-dropped Swamp Thing.
This is rather fitting as the character of Constantine was first introduced to the world in 1984 by Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben in ‘The Saga of the Swamp Thing’ #25.
It was a simple reveal with Constantine stating on the screen that “I happen to know a Swamp Thing.” The episode gives a few other callbacks to the character as Caity Lotz’s Sarah Lance and Jes Macallan’s Ava Sharpe are having a date where they’re watching movies. At one point, Sarah pauses a film which is called ‘Swamp Thaaaang’ which is the fourth part of the series which they’re watching. It looks like Swamp Thing isn’t just a character in the Arrowverse, but there is a horror B-movie franchise based around him.
So it would appear that a Swamp Thing does exist in the Arrowverse, but it isn’t clear if this is the same one that will show up in DC Universe. If the two do happen to be one and the same that could provide plenty of crossover opportunity in the future. If they aren’t, it’ll just be another instance that audiences have to wrap their minds across multiple takes on the same character. Only, in this instance, it will have multiple versions on television and not a distinct disconnect between the big and the small screen iterations of characters.
Thankfully, we have the multiverse to explain all that away.
