Short Treks

While it may be tough to wait for the new season of ‘Star Trek Discovery,’ especially since it will not be back next month for the fall premieres, the creative forces behind the series are releasing 4 shorts based on the series called ‘Short Treks’ to help tide fans over. A trailer for which you can check out below.

It is a solid idea to further explore the world established by the new series and give some of the lesser characters a chance to shine on their own before the new season begins and the focus is back on the main cast. Plus, it lets the show experiment a little bit with some different formats and plot structures as the shorts are not tied to the same episodic constraints as the main episodes of the series, which to me is pretty exciting.

Here are the premiere dates and plot details for the 4 ‘Short Treks’:

* “Runaway” (Thursday, Oct. 4) — “Onboard the U.S.S. Discovery, Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.”

* “Calypso” (Thursday, Nov. 8) — “After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface.”

* “The Brightest Star” (Thursday, Dec. 6) — “Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.”

* “The Escape Artist” (Thursday, Jan. 3) — “Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship — just in time to try out his latest con.”

Personally I am most excited for ‘The Escape Artist,’ as I love Harry Mudd and I really enjoy seeing Rainn Wilson on the series, partially because I can just imagine how excited Dwight Schrute would be to know his doppelganger was a part of ‘Star Trek’ now.

What do you think of the new shorts based on this trailer and these write-ups? Do you still wish the main show would have premiered earlier this year for its second season? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
