Big news of the ‘Space Jam 2’ front! It seems that Lebron James has managed to secure Ryan Coogler, director of ‘Black Panther,’ to come on board as a producer on the upcoming film with his company, SpringHill Entertainment. The news was announced with the following tweet which has Coogler’s name on a locker next to director Terence Nance, which itself is next to a locker for Lebron and another one for Bugs Bunny. While speaking about the big news of getting Coogler on board, James spoke about what the upcoming film means for him, and what kind of experience he wants to give the audience:
“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie. It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”
Back when Justin Lin was stilled attached to write/ direct, he also had a lot of big hopes for the movie, stating:
“I’ve been really wanting to push that genre, but to do that you need the right amount of time. So there’s a logistical challenge but also creatively, to do a sequel 20 years later with a new cast and also to be able to, in a relevant way, bring the Looney Tunes back. That’s very important to me to do it right. I feel I’ve done nine different iterations already and we’re going to keep going, but we’re getting closer every day.”
Of course, Coogler producing does not necessarily let us know the full level of his involvement with the film just yet, as some producers tend to be very hands-off. But somehow I doubt Lebron would have brought Coogler on-board if it was for name recognition only. It will be interesting to see what tricks Coogler brings to the table.
