It looks like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ will finally be coming to a close when it finishes Season 12, and I know I cannot help but breathe a sigh of relief. Thank goodness Jim Parsons saw the writing on the wall and has stated he will not return to the series after this season Since there really is no show without Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the network had no choice but to announce this as the beginning of the end.
‘The Big Bang Theory’ has been definitely grasping at straws the last couple of seasons, and the series was starting to lose some of its luster. And while it was a great achievement to hit 12 seasons, the show was once a series where you could not help but laugh, very often as you watched, with good writing and acting and with everything feeling very fresh and original, something that has been lacking in recent seasons. Of late, things have felt a bit stale and you almost got the feeling that everyone was phoning it in, only keeping the show going out of loyalty, a paycheck, and the idea that you should not walk away from a good thing.
According to a statement released by Warner Bros. Television, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions:
“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past 12 seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”
I’m hoping now that everyone is aware that this is the end, we will see a resurgence in the final season because they will all be aware that this is it, there is no going back after this, and really give it their all. Of course, part of the problem is what else can they do at this point? Sheldon and Amy are married, as are Howard and Bernadette and Penny and Leonard, the only character who is still alone is Raj. While I suspect they will probably rush a romantic interest for him so he does not end the series alone, that is not enough story to carry a season. They’ve said before they probably won’t have Penny get pregnant, and it is probably too early for Amy to get pregnant, and Bernadette has already been pregnant twice, so pregnancy stories are out. They have done various “career” stories for all the characters a number of times and while that is still an option, I just don’t know if it is enough to carry the final season. My guess is that the main plot will end with everyone moving their own separate ways with Sheldon and Amy moving to Texas or something, and Penny and Leonard moving to a house in the suburbs so they can finally start a family. Just my theories though.
