‘Freaks’, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, is  a “genre-bending psychological sci-fi thriller” about a young girl whose father locks her away in their house, supposedly for her own safety.  The girl eventually escapes and discovers a “bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father’s protective and paranoid control.”  Emile Hirsch plays the father while Bruce Dern portrays the mysterious Mr. Snowcone, the stranger that entices the young girl, Chloe, to escape her house/prison.  Lexy Kolker (‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Shooter’) portrays Chloe, who seems to be gifted with some kind of supernatural powers.  The cast also includes Amanda Crew and Grace Park.

‘Freaks’ will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Thursday, September 6th through Sunday, September 16th.  The first trailer is very brief and offers very little information about what the movie is actually about. But it does seem very moody and sinister, with obvious supernatural elements.

Check it out below:

In this inventive and powerful science-fiction thriller, a disturbed father (Emile Hirsch) locks his 7-year-old daughter (Lexy Kolker) in a house, warning her of grave dangers outside. But the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) convinces the girl to escape and join him on a quest for family, freedom, and revenge.

Could this low-budget thriller become the next ‘A Quiet Place’?  We’ll have to see.

Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein previously worked together on the Disney series ‘Mech X-4’.  They are also working together on an upcoming Disney project, the live-action adaptation of millennial cartoon favorite ‘Kim Possible‘.  Before that, they worked together on the video game-based web series ‘Ingress Obsessed’.

Right now, it appears that ‘Freaks’ is only making the film festival circuit, but if it goes over well, a studio may acquire it to distribute.
