Venom

The jury may still be out on whether or not Sony’s gamble on a Spider-Verse without Spider-Man is actually going to work, but one cannot deny that the first entry into the shared universe, ‘Venom,’ is certainly starting to pick up steam, especially after the latest trailer which seems to have finally sparked the excitement of the fan-base and captured the imagination of those hoping to see the character adapted correctly onto the big screen. The film is shaping up to be kind of a weird buddy-cop type of movie, with journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and the symbiote needing to find a way to work together to bring down the Life Foundation led by Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed).

When speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the relationship between the symbiote and Eddie, Hardy had the following the say:

“They’re a bit lost in this world, and finding each other and negotiating an ethical framework is perhaps a gift and a burden for the two of them. They bring out the very best and the very worst in each other.”

The film also has going for it that Venom is not a hero but rather an anti-hero, and while this is kind of an origin story, it breaks the mold in that the symbiote is a little bit evil (it does enjoy biting people’s heads off). Yet it and Eddie merge into one person, capable of good and evil, who the audience will be rooting for, despite knowing it could all too easily become the villain. All of which is perfectly encapsulated by the new image released to Entertainment Weekly (right), which shows an encounter between Venom and what looks like a crook at a convenience store, where the clerk behind the counter looks terrified, so we’re not sure if Venom is stopping a robbery or accosting a customer of the store.

Venom

According to director Ruben Fleischer during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“Usually a human gets imbued with powers or an alien comes from outer space and has to figure out how to live on our Earth. But this is really about a relationship between two people who have to work together to create this hybrid symbiotic relationship.”
