The plot for the eleventh season of ‘Doctor Who’ is still a closely guarded mystery but actors Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill were able to open up a bit as to what we could expect. It sounds like the new Doctor’s best friends feel that “family” is a central key to these characters. On the upcoming season, Cole plays Ryan and Gill is Yaz. Both share how their characters, and a little of the Doctor, will develop in the 10-episode run.
Cole shares:
“It starts off as a bit of chaos. It’s all over the place… and then we just kind of gel. There’s more of an understanding of each other and [a sense of] knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
Chaos in the world of ‘Doctor Who’? I’m sure none of the fans saw that coming.
Gill added that Cole’s character Ryan “challenges the Doctor from time to time” but that Yaz is “completely in awe” of the Time Lord. As to the team on the whole:
“We all see the Doctor in a different light. I think that’s what’s very interesting. We don’t all believe what she says is gospel. My character does, but not everyone. You have people questioning her.”
Just because Yaz is a huge fan of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor doesn’t mean that she is that comfortable being in the TARDIS right off the bat:
“It feels like a family by the end of it. For my character, there’s times where she wants to go home and make sure everything’s okay. But I feel like by the end of it, while she knows it’s always an option to go home, this is kind of her new family.”
While we’ve always seen the rest of the cast be just as vital as the Doctor, it sounds like this season’s three supporting TARDIS characters might be some of the most impactful written to date.
