Sega has had decades of success with ‘Sonic the Hedgehog‘ from the video games which started it all to comics to a television show and now the blue hedgehog is running onto the big screen. Not only that, but they’ve just made the casting choice to have Ben Schwartz (‘Parks and Recreation,”House of Lies’) voice the central character.

For casting, he’ll be playing opposite Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik. James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard, and Jeanie Cloutier also have parts in the film. Jeff Fowler (‘Gopher Broke’) will be directing them through whatever crazy shenanigans this speedy hedgehog gets up to in order to save the day. The movie is stated to be a mixture of live-action and CGI to bring the world to life.

We don’t have a lot of details about the film quite yet, but a bit of the plot is known as producer Neal Moritz has stated:

“What we’re trying to do with ‘Sonic’ is make a movie about a small-town police officer and Sonic at a time when they are both desperately in need of a friend, and we hope that this theme is friendship is what gives the film its heart and makes it prosper.”

The Sonic franchise kicked off in 1991 and was created to go up against Mario from Nintendo to capture the minds and hearts of video game playing children everywhere.

Here is Schwartz being excited about the news on social media:
