project blue book

While it is hard to not see Aidan Gillen as the master manipulator Littlefinger in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones‘, the actor is showing off a new side to his talent in this trailer for ‘Project Blue Book!’

Instead of a man who wants to become the ruler of Westeros, we’re getting a look into someone who is trying to investigate the appearance of UFO’s. The series is set in the 1950’s and produced by Robert Zemeckis (‘Back to the Future’) that was inspired by an actual Air Force program. In it, we follow Gillen’s character of J. Allen Hynek and Michael Malarkey’s (‘The Vampire Diaries’) character Captain Michael Quinn who are working together to see if the government is hiding anything about UFO’s while they investigate the uptick in the phenomenon.

As the trailer shows, this isn’t exactly a show about aliens. As showrunner Sean Jablonski shares:

“This is not a little green men show. This is more of a government conspiracy show with a great sci-fi twist — and also a character piece. Everything we see is and is not what it is. We’re not gonna take the position, certainly not early on, that little green men are running around and it’s just a question of finding them. The creature that you see in that tank is to them what they think it is, and yet it’s not.”

Gillen chimed in that “Some things are explained in a logical, scientific manner, and some things can’t be. That’s the way it was for [the real] Hynek.” This statement makes me feel that we’ll be getting some ‘X-Files’ styled episodes of investigation and a lot of misdirection from the show as it progresses.

Are you looking forward to ‘Project Blue Book’? Do you feel that the show will have hints of the alien conspiracies from ‘X-Files’ without the aliens being in your face? What do you think of Aidan Gillen taking a different direction to his acting than the villainous Littlefinger? Share your thoughts below!

Synopsis:

HISTORY’s upcoming new drama series ‘Project Blue Book’ is based on the true, top-secret investigations into Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and related phenomena conducted by the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1969.

Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen), a brilliant yet underappreciated college professor, is recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead a clandestine operation called Project Blue Book. Along with his partner, the debonair Air Force Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey), he is summoned to investigate UFO sightings around the country and use science to discover what really happened. However, when some encounters cannot be explained away, and cases remain open, Hynek begins to suspect that he has been duped by the government into a larger conspiracy to cover up the truth. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War and rising Atomic Era, each episode will draw from the actual Project Blue Book case files, blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history.
