Spock is coming to ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ but don’t expect to recognize the Vulcan that we all know and love. In fact, as this takes place a few years before The Original Series, there is going to be a bit of disconnect as he has yet to become the cool as a cucumber half alien that you would imagine him to be.
According to Alex Kurtzman:
“This is not entirely the Spock who has been formed enough to be the Spock that we know from TOS. There’s a lot of story about who Spock was before he becomes the Spock that is the yin-yang to Kirk. What I’m so excited about is that we have an opportunity to present a version of Spock that’s both totally consistent with the Spock everyone knows but very, very different. And it’s all gonna tie to how we sync up with canon.”
As ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is canon, we know that Spock will live long and prosper, but it feels highly unlikely that his sister Burnham will share that same fate. As the character is never mentioned in The Original Series or after, it means that she’ll either end up dead or the two will become so estranged that he refuses to speak of her. Kurtzman has previously explained that the upcoming season will share the exact reason why Trekkies never knew of Spock’s sister.
Sonequa Martin-Green added, “We’re certainly gonna see Spock, and we’re gonna be exploring those family dynamics. We’re gonna see a lot between them.”
Executive producer Heather Kadin expounded that their relationship is pivotal to this story arc:
“I think that like any brother or sister, there’s love. There’s deep wells of stuff. That’s what’s so great about exploring that relationship, is there’s a lot of tricky stuff that we get to dig into.”
Honestly, I’m just curious how they will have this “sync up with canon” and fix the continuity issues with all of the changes that we’ve seen so far. I’m hoping that we’ll be getting a story that not only makes sense but blows our minds as it unfolds.
