Luke Baines will assume the identity of Jonathan Morgenstern for the remaining episodes of Freeform’s cancelled fantasy series ‘Shadowhunters’.  There are ten regular episodes left, plus a two hour wrap-up movie, which will air next spring.  These episodes were originally slated to air this past spring/early summer until Freeform chose to cancel the series, at which point they realized they needed to retool them to properly end the series. The current third season adapts the fourth and fifth novels in the popular Cassandra Clare novel series, while the two-hour finale will adapt the sixth.

At the end of the spring finale, it was revealed that Morgenstern was masquerading as Sebastian Verlac, played by Will Tudor, only to be reborn as Clary’s brother.  “Jonathan’s return will present Clary and the Shadowhunters with a new level of evil that they can’t even imagine.”  Australian Baines has mainly appeared in horror movies, ‘The Possession of Michael King’, ‘As Night Comes’, ‘The Girl in the Photographs’ and the upcoming ‘Fright Fest’.  He will also appear in this December’s comedic crime film ‘Under the Silver Lake’.

It was announced in early June that Freeform was cancelling ‘Shadowhunters’ after three seasons due to budgetary reasons.  An agreement with Netflix provided extra funding for the series, with Netflix getting foreign streaming exclusivity.  But without that deal in place, Freeform and Constantin Films couldn’t afford to keep producing the show.  Fans have attempted to get another network or streaming service to pick it up and collected thousands of dollars for charity in the name of ‘Shadowhunters’ and its fandom, but so far there is no word on a stay of execution.

‘Shadowhunters’ stars Katherine McNamara as lead character Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Alisha Wainwright as Maia Roberts, and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane.

An exact return date hasn’t been given for the remaining episodes beyond spring 2019.
