Warner Bros just revealed their new The Worlds of DC banner at San Diego Comic-Con, signifying that the studio is moving forward with their DC Comics-based movies but perhaps in new directions. One film that has been in the pipeline since WB announced plans to for these DC movies is ‘Green Lantern Corps’ an attempt to erase the memory of the 2011 flop starring Ryan Reynolds.
While attending SDCC, DC’s former Chief Creative Officer and current head of Mad Ghost Productions, Geoff Johns, who made a name for himself writing the ‘Green Lantern’ comic books, spoke to IGN and stressed how different the upcoming film would be from the previous dud.
“It’s a complete re-imagining, just like I did Green Lantern: Rebirth in the comics. I’m going to be hopefully delivering a script that Warner loves and DC likes and they want to make it. It’s going to celebrate the mythology and reinvent it in a different way. If you’ve read my Green Lantern run… it’s very much in line with some stuff we did in there.”
Johns is writing and producing ‘Corps’ and he stressed that his script would borrow from his own work, which was excellent, however, to play devil’s advocate, it was Johns’ run that also led to the 2011 movie, which actually drew quite a bit from his run and look how that turned out.
One big difference is that ‘Corps’ will feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart in what is being described as “Lethal Weapon in space,” with one (reportedly Jordan) being the more assured, veteran Lantern and the other (Stewart) as a brash new recruit.
‘Green Lantern Corps’ was originally expected to hit theaters in 2020, but with no complete script, and with all the turmoil behind-the-scenes at WB in regard to their DC movies, it’s highly unlikely that this movie will meet that date.
