Not all big name actors enjoy reading for parts and it looks like Russell Crowe (‘The Mummy,’Noah’) is one of them. The man who played Superman’s dad in ‘Man of Steel’ was asked by Cable’s creator Rob Liefeld to play the character on Twitter and the way he did so didn’t work out that great for him. In fact, Liefeld got into some hot water about it!

Prior to Josh Brolin taking the part, Liefeld thought Russell Crow would have made a great Cable and decided to reach out to the actor on Twitter. As he tells it:

“Then one night before I went to bed, I didn’t know Russell Crowe was on Twitter, and I stupidly tweeted to Russell Crowe – not ever thinking he’d answer me – and I go ‘Hey Russell, you should read for Cable!’ That didn’t turn out very well, I got yelled at a lot, because I woke up – because he’s in Australia – to Russell Crowe saying ‘Read for it?!’ And my manager said ‘Yeah, Russell Crowe doesn’t read for parts Rob, you kind of insulted him. I’m like ‘I’m sorry! They just haven’t picked Cable yet, so I’m just putting it out there.’ And then my phone rings, so some Fox people may or may not have yelled at me for an hour.”

I think we can all agree that Brolin has nailed the role of everyone’s favorite time traveler in a way that Crowe just wouldn’t have been able to pull off. Thankfully for all of us, Crowe is a big enough name where he doesn’t need to read for parts and was annoyed enough about the situation to never really look into it. This isn’t exactly the kind of role you can imagine him shining in these days.

Are you glad that Josh Brolin ended up as Cable? Can you imagine what kind of a train wreck the character would have been if Russell Crowe had ended up playing him? Share your thoughts below, True Believers!
