Ant-Man And The Wasp

Director Peyton Reed proves he understands what makes comics great by sharing why he didn’t include cameos of the Avengers in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp.’ Almost every Marvel Studios film these days includes some characters outside of the main one which it is about, and it sounds like ‘Ant-Man, and the Wasp’ won’t be shoehorning any in.

According to Reed:

“I always envisioned this as a standalone movie. Obviously, when you see the movie, you’ll see how it ties into the larger universe, but I like that Hope and Scott and Hank are operating in this little corner of the universe. And then you sort of… you know how it ties into the larger thing, you know the timeline, but they’re doing their own thing over there.”

A standalone movie is great however the main reason we do not see cameos appears to be that the director knows that for every team comic or crossover event, we also have heroes doing their own thing:

“And I like that because it reminds me of the Marvel comics where you have the Avengers doing something here, and Spider-Man is doing something, and Black Panther is doing something, and Iron Man… they’ve got their own thing. And then there’s cross-pollination. And this felt like we had already set up… we had enough characters to service in this movie. It was exciting just telling the Scott-Hope partnership story, [which] was a big deal. And introducing Wasp. That to me was exciting and a big responsibility.”

This is something that even the standalone films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe haven’t been doing much of. I’m eager to see it happen though and hope that the trend can continue. Even if films are used as building blocks towards the more massive movies they don’t need to all be crossovers as well.

It is a bit refreshing to keep that in mind.

Are you excited that ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ sounds like we won’t be seeing any other Avengers pop up? Do you feel that this is a sound reason not to have a cameo or will that seem strange after the majority of other Marvel movies as of late? Share your thoughts below, True Believers!
